Something the French Are Getting Right

without comments

This story from the BBC describes how the French government is backing a move to install cell phone signal blockers in all cinemas and theatres. I wish the same would happen here – it is very annoying to have your movie disturbed by cell phones lighting up around you as their owners text message oh-so-important information to each other. Hanging’s too good for ’em!

Turning Back Time

without comments

One of the neat things about computers is that you can timestamp any thing to pretty much what you want. Its easy to encode a picture with a false date, edit it to show things that weren’t there and no one is the wiser. And so it is with this sorry collection of pages that I call my blog, thoughts that were once expressed have been unexpressed, wiped from the ether as if they had never happened. And now that I think about it, maybe they never did ?

RIP Rodney Dangerfield

with 2 comments

Sad news from the world of entertainment, the great Rodney Dangerfield died yesterday. I hadn’t even heard of him before discovering Caddyshack where I think he pretty much stole the show. A very funny guy, indeed.

I’m struggling not to post a thought about the current election campaigning here in the USA. I decided this blog wouldn’t touch politics, religion or sex (hey, my mother reads this!) but I’m not sure I can hold it in much longer. As a colleague of mine once said a long time ago, clenching is bad.

iPod Woes

without comments

(2 updates in one day, aren’t you all lucky!)

I’m loving my iPod, already have 15Gb of music on it but I’m not having any joy with the music delivery system, aka the headphones. I’ve never been able to get the ‘inside your ear’ style to stay in my ears so I bought some that clip on to the top of the ear but after an hour or two they start to hurt. So now I’m back to the regular ‘sit on your head’ type, and will see how those work for me.

Weather Envy

without comments

I love extreme weather so I am a little envious of the people in Florida, Louisiana etc anticipating the arrival of Hurrican Ivan. Saw some neat pictures of high seas this morning as the outer bands of the hurrican were approaching. Of course I can do without the destruction and risk of death associated with these things but before I die I want to get close to a hurricane, some tornadoes and, the ultimate, a tsunami.

I like fast food and staying in hotels for work means I am eating a lot of it – so much for the weight loss I achieved earlier this year. Anyway, here are the totally undisputable – I dare you! – champions of fast food:

The Olympics

without comments

Sitting in my hotel last week I watched a lot of Olympics which surprised me as in 2000 I found the US TV coverage of the games to be unpleasant and distasteful: no coverage of foreign athletes and way over the top hyping of even the most unqualified US contender. This time around it seems better, sure we don’t get to see events that aren’t contested by a strong US athlete and if a foreigner beats an America we often don’t see them for more than a split second, but I am enjoying the games this time around. Now if they would only show a British athlete…. but, I know, you blink in an early round and you’ve missed them.

In case anyone is wondering about my PC woes, I have everything working but the performance of the 3.2G P4 chip is sorry to say the least. I’ve learned that the people at ChipsAndMemory are clueless morons and I will never buy from them again. During the install my digital vidcam decided it didn’t want to talk the firewire any more which is a major pain since the 8mm film transfer relies on it. Canon vidcams are notorious (I have since found out) for not working with firewire cards. Odd thing is that it was working on my old machine fine before I built the new one; now it won’t work in either machine. I have other firewire devices that are working so its definitely an issue with the Canon camera.
