Cleanliness is Next to ….

[Back to our regularly scheduled programming]

Sat in the food court over looking the ice rink this evening, a family takes the table next to me, mother, father and three small kids. But before the kids can sit down, the parents bring out the wet naps and wipe down the table. Yeah, the table could do with a wipe. Next they wipe down all the chairs, including seats and frames. Well, they are all wearing shorts. Finally, more wet naps come out and they wipe down the metal railing over which you can watch the action on the ice. I suppose you can’t be too careful in these germ infested hovels.

The Perfect Storm

without comments

Had a doosie of a storm overnight, I haven’t heard thunder so deafening and room shaking in a long time. Lots of lightening, too. Very cool. Made me think of my mother who hates thunder, she would always try to hide behind a pillow on the sofa so as not to hear the claps. The storm must have lasted a couple of hours, kept me awake (well, that and some other things). dbmini has some neat pictures of the stormy skies up his way.

PS. In case you haven’t guessed I did not win the $250M lottery jackpot.

New Theme Coming Soon

with 3 comments

I am really starting to hate the theme I picked for this site, look for a change just as soon as I can find one I like. If you don’t read the MINI blog, you should as the theme there is really kind of cool, in a fruity way.

I’m disappointed, but not surprised, in the result of the San Diego Mayoral election. The results bothers me in that I really think Donna Frye has zero clue about anything to do with running a city, but what bothers me more is that she looks like a warning poster for staying out in the sun too long: wear sun block kids, or else look like this….

I’m off to England Friday evening for a week, visit my mother in her convalescent hospital, so there will be no updates for a while.

News Broadcasts

without comments

So, as you may have seen from the news, there was a big earthquake in northern CA last night that triggered an automatic tsunami warning. Props to NBC news for issuing a special news bulletin telling us that the chances of a big wave hitting San Diego were close to nil and to not worry about it, but a boo hiss to CBS news which was treating the warning like a disaster creeping up on us. If all you had listened to was them you would have been packing up your bags and heading to the hills. Irresponsible and sensationalist broadcasting at his best.

Snow and Ice – in San Diego?!

with 2 comments

Last Thursday I had a flying lesson at 7am, when I got to the plane my instructor was already there “de-icing” the wings. Freezing temperatures overnight had left a thin, but bumpy, layer of frost across the top of the wing. Understandably, Bob didn’t want to take off with that on there so I spent 15 minutes fetching small cups of hot water from the office to pour over the wing. It was probably 25 minutes later that we got off the ground.

This afternoon I drive to San Diego, get on top of the grade in driving rain, which quickly becomes soft snow falling. All around it resembles an alpine scene – untouched white snow covering the ground and buildings, the road slowly disappearing in front of me as the snow settles where it was only just recently plowed. We all slow to about 35 mph, the temp guage on the MINI says 32F and I can hear ice crunch under the wheels. The dynamic steering control on the MINI even comes on a couple of times though I never felt any loss of control.

I know its ‘winter’, but this is the ‘So’ in SoCal, whats with the snow and ice??

Liquid Sunshine

without comments

It’s raining outside. Now this shouldn’t be blog-worthy but until Sunday it hadn’t rained in San Diego for 182 days, setting a ‘no rain’ record for the city. The previous record of 181 days was set just last year.

But there’s no need to worry folks, the eminent governments of the Western world assure you there is no global warming, no greenhouse gas problem. So keep running your gas guzzlers, wasting energy, not recycling etc as normal weather variations will be back just as soon as another random event occurs to fix it.

A week in review

without comments

So no updates this past week due to the fact that I started a new job in San Diego and didn’t bring the URL to the post page with me! But yes I am finally back to work not much to do in my first week but once they discovered I was a Perl person they had me fixing Perl programs – seems that no matter what I get hired to do at any company, I end up writing Perl.

Oct 12 2004: At the request of my employer, I have removed all references to the names and places of my employment from this article.
