New Server, New WP, New Headaches

without comments

I’ve been doing software for long enough to know better, but last night I moved guapacha.com to a new host and at the same time upgraded WordPress to the new version and changed the directory structure. Of course, the whole thing was a complete f*!&@ up. But it all seems to be working again. No doubt there are still problems as I haven’t tried everything yet but at least now I can try to do some work today. Oh, except that its time for Call of Duty!

Quiz Time

without comments

Whilst waiting for my drink at Panda Express I could see a young member of staff taking a quiz on a PC. Saw one question:

What is the correct thing to do when there is a jam[*] in a food processor?

  1. Always unplug the processor
  2. Use your fingers to unjam the processor
  3. Use a metal object to free the jam
  4. Never unplug the processor

The young girl reached for the training manual and started flipping through the pages. The supervisor serving me said to her “it’s number 1”, the girl stared at the screen. I got my drink and sat down to hear the supervisor say again “it’s number 1, really”.

Back to the old theme while I find a new one.
[*] I assume this refers to a blockage rather than a strawberry preserve used on toast.

A Little Over-Optimism

without comments

Got an email today from our admin with the title Plasma TVs in the Conference Room. My first thought was that they were giving away plasma tv’s in the conference room but when I opened the email it was just a reminder not to leave them switched on. I felt pretty stupid for thinking that anyone would be giving away such a thing.

Perfect Gift for You and Yours

without comments

Thanks to the good folk at Boing Boing for drawing my attention to this. Get your hands on all of the plagues! Including, but not limited to:

  • A Giant Lice for lice.
  • An icky boil on a piece of flesh!
  • A spooky eyed drop of blood
  • Black Locust for locusts

The frog, lice, cow and locust wriggle and roll their eyes, quiver, buzz and move when you pull their string.

Video iPod Tomorrow?

with one comment

Its been rumoured for a long time that Apple is going to celebrate its 30th anniversary on April 1st by announcing some cool new products. Maybe it will be the new Intel iBook or, as most people are salivating for, the true video iPod. Guess we will have to wait and see but I hope I have enough pennies in my pocket to buy one or, if not, maybe the current iPod will get a price reduction and I can replace the one that was stolen.

I Miss My TiVo

with one comment

We don’t record many programs on our TiVo but I hadn’t realised just how much I’ve come to take for granted the ability to pause or rewind live TV. I’m staying in the San Diego apartment and I keep going to pause the TV to get a drink or use the toilet only to find that I can’t.

Last Day of Freedom

without comments

Everything is set for me to start at Sony on Monday so today is my last (week)day of freedom, no more getting up at 9.30 and waching Judge Joe Brown over lunch. But I’m also glad that it means no more sending out resumes every morning and waiting for the phone to ring.

I’d like to say I’m spending my last day in style but this morning I have some PC setup to do and this afternoon I need to complete my Lord of The Rings marathon, and at 12 hrs for the whole lot, marathon is the word.

And, finally, I want to thank the good state of California for keeping me somewhat financially afloat these past few weeks.

New Themes

without comments

Too much time on my hands before I start the new job so I’ve revamped all three blog sites with new themes. Can’t say for sure how long any of them will last but for now go check out the theme-y goodness at my mini blog and flying diary sister sites.

New Job Confirmed

with one comment

It took longer than I expected but I am finally about to start a new job since being laid off in January. As previously hinted, I will be joining Sony Computer Entertainment America at the end of the month. I can’t say what I’ll be working on as I don’t know. Apparantly the project is so secret I couldn’t be told, even after I signed the NDA. Its due to go live soon and then we’ll all know but all I can say its something to do with writing java web applications for the Playstation range. I’m looking forward to it, should be real interesting.

There is a major press conference from Sony tomorrow (probably today when reading this) which some say will be the announcement of the PlayStation3 features, dates etc. Others say they are going to announce delays and problems. Hopefully it will be the former but, reading the blogs etc, there sure is a lot of hate out there for Sony.
